What is Geotextile

A geotextile is a synthetic or natural fabric placed in contact with soil, rock, or other geotechnical material to perform one or more functions such as separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement, or protection.

Technical Types

1. Woven Geotextiles
  • Made by interlacing two or more sets of yarns (typically polypropylene or polyester).
  • Characterized by high tensile strength and low elongation.
  • Commonly used for reinforcement and separation in road and railway construction.

  • 2. Nonwoven Geotextiles
  • Manufactured by needle-punching or thermal bonding of fibers.
  • Offer excellent permeability and filtration properties.
  • Typically used for filtration, drainage, and protection (e.g., behind retaining walls, under riprap).

  • 3. Knitted Geotextiles
  • Produced by interlooping yarns, offering flexibility.
  • Less common; used in specialized reinforcement or erosion control applications.

    Geotextile Properties Table
    Property Typical Range / Description
Raw material Polypropylene (PP), Polyester (PET), Polyethylene (PE)
    Tensile Strength (MD/CD) 10 – 200 kN/m (depending on type)
Elongation at Break 10–100 % (woven < nonwoven)
Apparent Opening Size (AOS) 0.05 – 0.50 mm
    Permeability (Permittivity) 0.01 – 1.0 s⁻¹
    Mass per Unit Area 100 – 1200 g/m²
UV Resistance Retains >70 % strength after 500 h exposure
Temperature Resistance Up to 150 °C for PET; 110 °C for PP

    Main Functions

    1. Separation: Prevents intermixing of different soil layers (e.g., subgrade and aggregate).
    2. Filtration: Allows water to pass while retaining soil particles.
    3. Drainage: Facilitates lateral water flow within the plane of the fabric.
    4. Reinforcement: Improves load-bearing capacity by distributing stresses.
    5. Protection: Prevents puncture or damage to geomembranes or waterproofing layers.

    Applications

  • Road and railway construction
  • Embankments and retaining walls
  • Landfills and environmental containment
  • Coastal and riverbank erosion control
  • Drainage systems (subsurface or French drains)
  • Tunnel lining and waterproofing protection layers

    Suitable "PRO label industrial laundry"

The "PRO" lettering with a thick black background indicates suitability for care in professional laundries.
The series of numbers indicates which of the eight washing processes listed has been tested in accordance with ISO 15797.
The two symbols on the right represent the drying process. The hexagon in the square stands for tumble drying. The rectangle at the bottom stands for tunnel or cabinet finishing.
Our fabrics are produced suitable for industrial washing upon request.

    Durable
    Durable

    We produce durable fabrics

Durable fabrics are usually used in environments with harsher conditions. They may have to pass high-speed wear tests, more wash cycles test, or stronger pull, twist and bending tests to meet the conditions of use in the environment.

    Fade Resistant
    Fade Resistant

We produce our fabrics with big molecules and special dyes so that they will not fade for a longer period of time.

    Optional Chemical Finishes
    Optional Chemical Finishes

The technical properties given to woven and knitted fabrics by different finishing applications make the fabric, and therefore the user, protected against all environmental conditions and external factors. High-performance technical textile products are obtained with finishes that give the fabric properties such as antibacterial, water repellency or flame retardancy. Nano-sized components can make the fabric resistant to washing and functional with PFAS compatibility.
