What is Softshell Fabric?


Bientech softshell fabric is a type of performance material. It is made to provide a balance of comfort, flexibility, and protection from the elements. It is widely used in outdoor and activewear due to its versatile properties.

Softshell fabrics are designed to offer a unique combinationof protection, comfort, and flexibility. Here’s a detailed look at thecomposition and materials used in creating softshell fabric:

Outer Layer

  • Material: The outer layer is typically made from durable woven nylon or polyester.
  • Purpose: This layer provides a robust, water-resistant, and windproof barrier, protecting the wearer from the elements. The tight weave of these synthetic fibers helps block wind and repel water.

Middle Layer

  • Material: Often includes a breathable membrane, such as Pu, Pes, Ptfe, ePtfe, etc...

  • Purpose: This layer provides a robust, water-resistant, and windproof barrier, protecting the wearer from the elements. The tight weave of these synthetic fibers helps block wind and repel water.


Inner Layer

  • Material: Usually consists of a soft, insulating material like microfleece or brushed polyester.
  • Purpose: This layer provides warmth and comfort against the skin. It helps to wick moisture away from the body, enhancing the overall comfort of the jacket.



Water proofness

A membrane softshell with a higher water column, allows the fabric to withstand more before the first droplets can pass through. Even up to several times more than the woven material. Compare for yourself - the membrane can handle water resistance up to a 30,000mm water column, the woven fabric usually up to 5,000mm. Water proofness according to the world standard ISO 811 starts at 1,300mm.

Breathability

A material’s ability to breathe is crucial for all your outdoor activities. We do not want to burden you with the units in which they are measured, but the lower the RET value (breathability marking), the more breathable the softshell product is.

RET < 6 - peak (> 20,000 g/m2/24h)

RET = 6 - 13 – very good (9 000 - 20 000 g/m2/24h)

RET = 13 - 20 - satisfactory (4 000 - 9 000 g/m2/24h)

RET > 20 - unsatisfactory (< 4,000 g/m2/24h)

How to navigate through it all? Perhaps by approximate values of body vapour production versus permeability! When walking 5 – 10 000 g/m2/24h, when running up to 25 000 g/m2/24h.

Suitable "PRO label industrial laundry"

The "PRO" lettering with a thick black background indicates suitability for care in professional laundries.
The series of numbers indicates which of the eight washing processes listed has been tested in accordance with ISO 15797. 
The two symbols on the right represent the drying process. The hexagon in the square stands for tumble drying. The rectangle at the bottom stands for tunnel or cabinet finishing.
Our fabrics are produced suitable for industrial washing upon request.

We produce durable fabrics

Durable fabrics are usually used in environments with harsher conditions. They may have to pass high-speed wear tests, more wash cycles test, or stronger pull, twist and bending tests to meet the conditions of use in the environment.

We produce our fabrics with big molecules and special dyes so that they will not fade for a longer period of time.

The technical properties given to woven and knitted fabrics by different finishing applications make the fabric, and therefore the user, protected against all environmental conditions and external factors. High-performance technical textile products are obtained with finishes that give the fabric properties such as antibacterial, water repellency or flame retardancy. Nano-sized components can make the fabric resistant to washing and functional with PFAS compatibility.
