Ripstop Military Fabrics – Technical Overview

1. Definition and Structure

Ripstop fabrics are high-tenacity woven textiles engineered to resist tearing and ripping. The term “ripstop” refers to the reinforcement grid integrated during weaving — typically using thicker, stronger yarns (often 6.6 Nylon, Polyester, or blended aramid) interlaced at regular intervals (e.g., every 5 mm or 7 mm).

  • Weave type: Plain or ripstop (reinforced box pattern)
  • Grid size: 3×3 mm, 5×5 mm, or 7×7 mm typical
  • Yarn composition: Nylon 6.6 / Polyester / Cotton / Meta-aramid / Blended fibers
  • Yarn linear density: 210D – 1100D depending on end-use

  • 2. Key Mechanical and Physical Properties

    Technical Properties Table
    Property Typical Range / Description
Tensile Strength (warp/weft) 900–2500 N depending on yarn count
    Tear Strength 30–80 N (ASTM D1424 or ISO 13937-2)
    Abrasion Resistance > 20 000 cycles (Martindale ISO 12947)
    Weight 150 – 350 g/m² (customizable)
    Width 150 cm ± 2 cm standard
Air Permeability 0–15 mm/s (controlled for waterproof types)

    3. Functional Finishes and Coatings

Military ripstop fabrics are often finished or laminated to meet environmental and operational requirements:

  • Water Repellent (DWR): Fluorocarbon-free or C6-based coatings.
  • Waterproofing: PU or Acrylic coatings (hydrostatic head > 2000 mm).
  • Flame Retardant: Meta-aramid inherent FR or FR coatings (EN ISO 15025)
  • Infrared (IRR/NIR) Camouflage: Reflectance balanced to blend with night-vision environments.
  • Oil & Chemical Resistance: Compliant with EN 13034 / ISO 6530 for liquid protection.
  • Antistatic: Incorporation of carbon conductive filaments.
  • UV Stability: Stabilized with HALS or titanium dioxide for desert and outdoor deployment.

  • 4. Fiber and Blend Options

Base Fiber Key Advantages Typical Applications
Nylon 6.6 High tensile & tear strength, abrasion resistant Tactical gear, packs, body armor covers
Polyester (High Tenacity) UV resistance, dimensional stability Shelter fabrics, tents, ponchos
Cotton/Nylon (NyCo) Breathability + strength Combat uniforms (e.g., US BDU, ACU)
Meta-Aramid Inherent flame retardancy Flight suits, tanker coveralls
Para-Aramid blends Cut and ballistic resistance Reinforcement panels, gloves

    5. Common Applications

    Suitable "PRO label industrial laundry"

The "PRO" lettering with a thick black background indicates suitability for care in professional laundries.
The series of numbers indicates which of the eight washing processes listed has been tested in accordance with ISO 15797.
The two symbols on the right represent the drying process. The hexagon in the square stands for tumble drying. The rectangle at the bottom stands for tunnel or cabinet finishing.
Our fabrics are produced suitable for industrial washing upon request.

    Durable
    Durable

    We produce durable fabrics

Durable fabrics are usually used in environments with harsher conditions. They may have to pass high-speed wear tests, more wash cycles test, or stronger pull, twist and bending tests to meet the conditions of use in the environment.

    Fade Resistant
    Fade Resistant

We produce our fabrics with big molecules and special dyes so that they will not fade for a longer period of time.

    Optional Chemical Finishes
    Optional Chemical Finishes

The technical properties given to woven and knitted fabrics by different finishing applications make the fabric, and therefore the user, protected against all environmental conditions and external factors. High-performance technical textile products are obtained with finishes that give the fabric properties such as antibacterial, water repellency or flame retardancy. Nano-sized components can make the fabric resistant to washing and functional with PFAS compatibility.
